The conference will focus on utilizing biomass for heat and power applications, and aims to increase technological knowledge, and identify regional opportunities and community sustainability champions. The North Bay Police responded to 219 calls for service over the weekend, resulting in 13 arrests. Offences included domestic assaults, threatening, mischief, theft, impaired driving, breach of court orders and public intoxication. In April 2013, a man reported that a missing credit card was used on two separate occasions to withdraw money from his account. An investigation into the fraudulent use has resulted in the arrest of 20-year old Tyler Quiring-Daley of Second Avenue on May 17. Police located a small amount of what is believed to be marijuana on his person. Daley has been charged with two counts of unauthorized use of a credit card, two counts of possession of stolen property, three counts of breach of probation and possession of a controlled substance. He was held in custody for a bail hearing. Constable Gerry Martin is investigating.

On May 17, a man gave money to a woman to buy him drugs. When the woman did not return, he took her prescription drugs. The male was called by the woman about the theft and he threatened her. 52-year old Harry Black of Fourth Avenue West was arrested and charged with theft and threatening. He is to appear in court on July 2, 2013. Constable Sarah Kavanagh is investigating.

Victoria Day closures

Victoria Day is one of nine stat holidays in Ontario and that means most retail outlets and government offices are shutdown. That includes City Hall — meaning council will meet tomorrow night. Those retail operations that open illegally today face fines of $500 to $50,000. Some exemptions include gas stations, tourist operators and convenience stores. Meantime, there’s no garbage or recycling pick-up today, it’s being delayed a day this week. There’s also no city transit service today either.

MP Jay Aspin wants gov’t to be accountable

Jay Aspin is a believer in government accountability. The Nipissing-Temiskaming MP says he releases an annual report card because he believes it’s important to let voters know what you’re doing in a wide range of areas. He says accountability should extend to the canadian senate. Aspin says since earning a majority in the senate, the Conservatives have announced a series of accountability measures, and the result has been the public release of senators’ expenses. Aspin says if you’re doing public service, you should be elected by the public and accountable to the public every year.

Fight FORE Cancer Memorial Charity Golf Tournament

In conjunction with the Cancer Society the Fight FORE Cancer Charity Golf Tournament is running its second annual event. This year’s event is special as it’s a memorial golf tournament for Brad Schroeder who at 20 years old, passed away from Ewing Sarcoma, a form of cancer. The event began as a Grade 12 school project and now has turned into an annual event. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about Ewing Sarcoma and to show that cancer can affect any one at any age as well I want to help get people involved with organizing events and make a difference in the community.

The tournament is a 4 person scramble taking place at Osprey Links on May 26th with an 8:30am shotgun and a silent auction will be open throughout the event. The cost per golfer is $85 which includes golf and cart, dinner and prize.

OTS and OARA Annual Tire Take Back Event

Your old tires can help make a child’s dream come true.

From May 27 to June 1, Ontario Tire Stewardship and Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association are collecting old tires for free during their Annual Tire Take Back events.

Ontarians can drop off an unlimited amount of Passenger, Light Truck and Agricultural tires during business hours knowing it will be recycled responsibly.

Recycling fees will be donated to The Sunshine Foundation of Canada to help fulfill the dreams of children with severe physical disabilities and life threatening illnesses.

Over the past four years, these events have raised more than five hundred thousand dollars for Sunshine Foundation. Help reach this year’s goal of transforming old tires into new dreams and raise more than one hundred thousand dollars.

The community that collects the most tires will also receive fifteen thousand dollars worth of sustainable, recycled tire products from Ontario Tire Stewardship.
